In a broken world, the last thing she expects to find is someone who refuses to leave her behind.

“Possibly the best book of 2026 and it’s only March!”

“This is one of those books where you know that you’re going to be in for a ride from the very beginning. It has a way of bringing you in and making you think about it.”

Synopsis

Nefra lives alone with her uncle Enkin in a bunker beneath a ruined observatory. Above them lies a wasteland of collapsed cities and null-zones where creatures linger, and Enkin’s soul has been trapped in a doll since an experiment went wrong thirteen years ago.

When a strange signal draws them deeper into the wasteland, they encounter Aurel, a man known as Half-Made, his body part crystal after a failed transformation. He offers them an artefact of unknown origins, and all he asks for in return is company.

What begins as an uneasy truce grows into something harder to abandon. But the artefact has drawn the attention of an organisation that believes people are nothing more than patterns to be studied and dissected; and they are willing to tear apart the lives around Nefra to get it.

Excerpt

The bunker lay half-buried under layers of sand and the collapsed brickwork of an old observatory. A young woman sat near the back, her bright green eyes fixed on the radio resting across her knees. Behind her, a doll crouched on the edge of a shelf, its alloy-infused legs folded beneath it. Then, the doll spoke. The voice was faint but unmistakably a man’s.

“Go back, Nefra,” he said, his voice quiet but clear. “Just a little.”

She nudged the dial, and there it was: a low hum, buried under the static. It was faint but steady, too smooth for noise, too slow for any language or code. It continued, even and deliberate. Nefra leaned forward, then looked back at the doll.

“Could it be a grounding fault, Uncle Enkin?”

Enkin dropped to the floor with a soft clink as he steadied himself. A long braid of white hair slipped over one shoulder, swaying as he turned, his wide eyes reflecting the dim light. When he spoke, his voice was crisp, precise, and thoughtful.

“It isn’t.” He glanced over; his blue eyes, lit from within, stayed fixed on the radio.

“It sounds old.”
